Commutator methods for unitary operators
We present an improved version of commutator methods for unitary operators
under a weak regularity condition. Once applied to a unitary operator, the
method typically leads to the absence of singularly continuous spectrum and to
the local finiteness of point spectrum. Large families of locally smooth
operators are also exhibited. Half of the paper is dedicated to applications,
and a special emphasize is put on the study of cocycles over irrational
rotations. It is apparently the first time that commutator methods are applied
in the context of rotation algebras, for the study of their generators.Comment: 15 page
Neutrino flux predictions for known Galactic microquasars
It has been proposed recently that Galactic microquasars may be prodigious
emitters of TeV neutrinos that can be detected by upcoming km^2 neutrino
telescopes. In this paper we consider a sample of identified microquasars and
microquasar candiates, for which available data enables rough determination of
the jet parameters. By employing the parameters inferred from radio
observations of various jet ejection events, we determine the neutrino fluxes
that should have been produced during these events by photopion production in
the jet. Despite the large uncertainties in our analysis, we demonstrate that
in several of the sources considered, the neutrino flux at Earth, produced in
events similar to those observed, would exceed the detection threshold of a
km^2 neutrino detector. The class of microquasars may contain also sources with
bulk Lorentz factors larger than those characteristic of the sample considered
here, directed along our line of sight. Such sources, which may be very
difficult to resolve at radio wavelengths and hence may be difficult to
identify as microqusar candidates, may emit neutrinos with fluxes significantly
larger than typically obtained in the present analysis. These sources may
eventually be identified through their neutrino and gamma-ray emission.Comment: 17 pages. Submitted to Ap
Optical control of the spin state of two Mn atoms in a quantum dot
We report on the optical spectroscopy of the spin of two magnetic atoms (Mn)
embedded in an individual quantum dot interacting with either a single
electron, a single exciton and single trion. As a result of their interaction
to a common entity, the Mn spins become correlated. The dynamics of this
process is probed by time resolved spectroscopy, that permits to determine the
optical orientation time in the range of a few tens of . In addition, we
show that the energy of the collective spin states of the two Mn atoms can be
tuned through the optical Stark effect induced by a resonant laser field
Study of moments of event shapes in e+e- annihilation using JADE data
Data from e+e- annihilation into hadrons collected by the JADE experiment at
centre-of-mass energies between 14 GeV and 44 GeV were used to study moments of
event shape distributions. The data were compared with Monte Carlo models and
with predictions from QCD NLO order calculations. The strong coupling constant
measured from the moments is alpha_S(M_Z) = 0.1286 +/- 0.0007 (stat) +/- 0.0011
(expt) +/- 0.0022 (had) +/- 0.0068 (theo), alpha_S(M_Z) = 0.1286 +/- 0.0072
(total error), consistent with the world average. However, systematic
deficiencies in the QCD NLO order predictions are visible for some of the
higher moments.Comment: JADE note 147 submitted as contributed paper to ICHEP 2004, corrected

Measurement of the Strong Coupling Constant alpha_S from the Four-Jet Rate in e+e- Annihilation using JADE data
Data from e+e- annihilation into hadrons collected by the JADE experiment at
centre-of-mass energies between 14 GeV and 44 GeV were used to study the
four-jet rate as a function of the Durham algorithm's resolution parameter
y_cut. The four-jet rate was compared to a QCD NLO order calculations including
NLLA resummation of large logarithms. The strong coupling constant measured
from the four-jet rate is alpha_S(M_Z) = 0.1169 +/- 0.0004 (stat) +/- 0.0012
(expt) +/- 0.0021 (had) +/- 0.0007 (theo), alpha_S(M_Z) = 0.1169 +/- 0.0026
(total error) in agreement with the world average.Comment: JADE note 146 submitted as contributed paper to ICHEP 200
Unitarity of the Leptonic Mixing Matrix
We determine the elements of the leptonic mixing matrix, without assuming
unitarity, combining data from neutrino oscillation experiments and weak
decays. To that end, we first develop a formalism for studying neutrino
oscillations in vacuum and matter when the leptonic mixing matrix is not
unitary. To be conservative, only three light neutrino species are considered,
whose propagation is generically affected by non-unitary effects. Precision
improvements within future facilities are discussed as well.Comment: Standard Model radiative corrections to the invisible Z width
included. Some numerical results modified at the percent level. Updated with
latest bounds on the rare tau decay. Physical conculsions unchange
